Natural wood siding and trim are subject to the damaging effects of the elements. Though popular and renewable, this material requires frequent maintenance and often comes from harvesting old-growth trees. Select only FSC-certified or repurposed wood products. Despite their energy-intensive manufacturing process, alternative products may be a greener choice compared to the entire life-cycle impact of natural wood siding and trim. For a rustic look, reclaimed wood is another great option to consider.

Cedar Cedar siding offers a combination of durability and good looks that makes it a great choice for historic structures. Though not completely impervious to the weather conditions of eastern Pennsylvania, cedar contains a natural chemical that makes it more resistant to moisture and insects than other wood species. Due to the large cell structure of the wood, it’s also a better insulator than vinyl or metal.

Fiber Cement Products such as HardiePlank siding are comprised of cement and wood fibers for a durable, low-maintenance material that mimics the look of natural wood.

Metal Aluminum and steel compositions are usually made of recyclable materials, which offsets their high embodied energy (green speak for the mix of manufacturing, transportation and labor costs they involve).

Stucco This classic cement-based treatment is durable, low-maintenance, and cost-efficient. For best results, stucco should be applied over block. Stucco over wood framing must be applied with proper ventilation to avoid moisture problems.

Brick and Stone Brick and stone siding rank right up there with some of the greener siding solutions a home owner can opt for. Going green isn't just about improving energy efficiency, it's also about using high-quality, long lasting, and healthy materials. Purchase locally manufactured brick and indigenous stone to reduce fossil fuels burned by transporting heavy materials long distances.
